Any of those could be signs that your vehicle’s driveshaft might need lubricating, and it’s important to have one of our technicians check it out. Your vehicle’s engine puts out a lot of twisting power. That force is called torque, and the driveshaft is the part that handles the job of transferring all that torque from your engine to the wheels. If it’s a four-wheel or all-wheel drive vehicle, it will have driveshafts front and rear.

Some driveshafts have different segments which are connected by couplings called U-Joints. So that everything can glide along fine, that whole assembly needs to stay well lubricated. Our technician can inspect the driveshaft and U-joints to make sure there aren’t any broken or excessively worn parts.

Many manufacturers recommend servicing and lubricating the driveshaft at certain intervals, and it’s important to keep on that schedule. It’s essential because poor lubrication can lead to a failure while you are driving, possibly causing other expensive parts to fail. Not keeping your driveshaft lubricated or failing to maintain it regularly is the top cause of driveshaft problems.

Which Oil is Best For Your Vehicle?

You’ve probably already heard that regular oil changes are extremely important for the health of your vehicle’s engine. That’s sound advice. But what you might not know is when it comes to motor oil, the real thing may not be the best thing for your engine.

There are different types of motor oil:
• Conventional oil, extracted from the ground and refined.
• Synthetic oil, manufactured from high-quality base oils and artificially-made chemical compounds.
• Synthetic oil blend, a mixture of conventional and synthetic oils.

The first thing you need to know is that most new engines require synthetic oil. If synthetic oil is recommended for your car – you MUST use it.

For the rest, there are many advantages to using synthetic oil over conventional oil.

• Synthetic oil provides better protection for your engine while helping it to perform better.
• Conventional oil breaks down over time, while synthetic oil lasts longer.
• Synthetics can stand higher temperature extremes, both heat, and cold.

Synthetic oil can be a better choice if you live in an extremely hot or cold climate or put a lot of strain on your engine by towing or carrying heavy loads. It also may be good for older engines that sometimes have a tendency to develop sludge.

Synthetic oil is a more expensive option, but you likely won’t have to have your oil changed as often. Some synthetics are recommended to last 10,000-15,000 miles/16,000-24,000 km between changes.

You might also consider a synthetic blend that gives you some of the advantages of synthetic oil at a lower cost. Have a talk with your service adviser about recommendations for what will best suit your vehicle and driving habits.

It’s interesting to note that in recent years, more than one out of two vehicle owners are opting for synthetic oil or a synthetic blend when they get their oil changed. Sounds like they’re on to something. In the long run, if you have fewer oil changes with synthetics, you’ll use less oil, a bonus for our environment.

How Does 4-Wheel Drive Work? Here’s Your Guide

Back in the day, 4-wheel drive and all-wheel drive were niche features. Unless you had a truck or an oddball vehicle like an Eagle wagon or Audi 4000, your vehicle was two-wheel drive. Now, with crossovers and SUVs supplanting sedans as the default choice for everyday transportation, it’s common for any given vehicle to sport a quartet of driven wheels. But that doesn’t mean all systems are created equal.

Unless you have a fully automatic all-wheel-drive system, there will be at least two drive configurations you can choose to maximize your vehicle’s capability in a given situation. If you drive an SUV with an off-road bent, like a Toyota Land Cruiser , then you’ll have more complicated choices—high range, low range, locked or unlocked center differential.

Then, there are all-wheel-drive vehicles with a two-wheel-drive mode (like the Chevy Equinox) and trucks and SUVs that offer all of the above.

Let’s begin with the main topic of confusion: 4-wheel drive versus all-wheel drive. Is 4-Wheel Drive or All-Wheel Drive Better?

Whether you want 4-wheel drive or all-wheel drive depends on the situation. Commuting to work in three inches of sleet? In that case, AWD is the hot setup. Off-roading, then 4-wheel drive is the choice.

Back in the early days of the SUV, four-wheel traction meant 4-wheel drive. Most systems these days are AWD, meaning that there’s a center differential of some sort that allows the front and rear tires to turn at different speeds. AWD can be used on dry pavement, where 4-wheel drive requires a slippery surface so that the front and rear ends can match speed without binding.

Most modern crossovers are AWD, and don’t offer the option to disengage the system—they just work automatically, as needed, when they detect slip. But even if you have that sort of system, there’s something you need to know. If you’ve got a vehicle that offers two-wheel drive or 4-wheel-drive auto, then most of the time you may as well use the 4WD Auto setting . It’s fine for dry pavement, so the only advantage of running in 2WD would be some fractional fuel economy benefit—or saving wear on the front-drive system. Meanwhile, 4WD Auto is handy even if it starts raining—your extra traction will be there, on demand, automatically.

4WD High is a setting rarely needed, if you’ve got a system that offers 4WD Auto. That’s because it just locks the front and rear end together, which might be useful in some narrow off-road context but isn’t doing anything for you on that snowy road. In fact, I’d rather have the system sending power forward or back as needed most of the time, even off-road.

What About This 4WD Low Range? Without an Auto setting, 4WD High is what you’d use in any situation that’s low-traction but relatively high-speed—a dirt road or snowy paved road. 4WD Low is strictly for slow off-roading or places where torque multiplication would really help you out (like deep sand). Low range used to be common, but these days it’s relegated to pickup trucks and SUVs that have serious off-road pretensions. A Toyota 4Runner would have it, but a Highlander won’t.

OK, let’s say you’re venturing off-road—a little beach driving. This isn’t an off-road instructional but we’ll assume you let some air out of your tires. Good. Now, what does that rocker switch on the dash do? The one that shows four tires with a little “X” between the rear ones? That’s your rear differential lock, and it can be handy.

Just as 4WD High locks the front and rear axles together, the rear diff lock connects the rear end side-to-side. That means that if one side loses traction, the opposite side keeps spinning, powering you forward. It’s a great feature, provided you’re driving straight.

You don’t really want to use your diff lock on a corner, because the whole point of a differential is to allow your car to make a smooth turn, with the outside tire turning faster than the inside. Lock them together and your car won’t want to turn. And when it does, it’ll judder and skid in protest.

There are also a few vehicles with a front differential lock, but I’m going to assume that if you bought one of those then you probably know how to use it.

Important note: before you go off-road, set your traction control, which likely means disabling it. The button usually has some squiggly lines on it. That’s your stability-control-defeat button. Stability control will try to keep your tires from spinning. If you’re on a rocky trail, that can be great—by grabbing the brakes at individual corners, stability control can sometimes mimic the benefits of locking differentials. But if you’re in mud, sand, or snow, stability control might get you stuck, even if you’ve got 4-wheel drive. That’s because in certain circumstances, you want wheelspin and momentum. Out on the sand, your stability control system will detect wheelspin and cut power to the spinning wheels. Which, in that context, will be all of them. Then you grind to a halt. To turn off the system, you usually hold down the button for at least five seconds. First the, traction-control system will deactivate (sometimes just with a push of a button) but you want the whole thing off, so hold down the button until you see a message like “stability-control system disabled.” Some cars, like Volvos, might not have a dedicated button, but stability control disable is always there somewhere, even if it’s buried five screens deep in a touchscreen menu.

One more thing: the price of your 4x4 often has a direct correlation to the complexity of its drive systems. And we can’t really explain all of them on a case-by-case basis, but if you purchase a machine with overt off-road pretensions, it behooves you to study up on its capabilities.

A Mercedes GLE 450 with the optional hydropneumatic suspension can bounce itself out if it gets stuck. The Ford Raptor offers something called Baja mode, which activates an antilag system for the turbos—yee haw. And the Land Cruiser has a button for off-road turn assist, which brakes the inside wheels to give you a skid-steer effect and tighten your turning circle on loose surfaces. But to activate it, you'll need to be in 4WD Low and using Crawl Control, which is like an off-road cruise control system.

Point is: whatever your rig, step one should probably be opening your glove box and reading the owner’s manual.

Today we want to talk about your engine air filter. That’s the filter that cleans the air before it’s burned in your engine. People wonder how often they should change their engine air filter . The simple answer is when it’s dirty . That’s a function of how much air has passed through the filter, so your manufacturer will recommend a mileage interval for replacing the air filter. But if you drive in areas with heavy dirt, dust and smog, that will affect how quickly the filter needs replacement.

Did you know? Only 30 percent of car batteries make it to 48 months. And the life expectancy varies by where you live. It ranges from 30-60 months depending on the climate conditions.

Why is that? It turns out that it's our modern cars with all their electric accessories that are to blame. Things like, GPS, streaming services, wi-fi, and entertainment computers are keeping vehicle batteries from maintaining a full charge. The longer a battery goes with a low charge, the sooner it'll die.

It's clear that people need to recharge your batteries. This is the job of the alternator. The problem comes when the car's demand for electricity is high and we are driving in stop and go conditions or short trips around town. The alternator just can't keep up.

The result is shortened battery life. So what can we do to improve our battery's health?

We need to keep the battery as close to a full charge as possible. That can be hard because sitting for just 24 hours in hot weather between charges can be too long. When the weather's cold in Wisconsin, sitting for several days will cause discharge.

So some highway driving will help keep a full charge if the battery has not been deeply depleted. Car batteries are not designed to be run down really low, or deep cycled, as it's called. So using your headlights or other power accessories when the car is off can deeply deplete your battery. Using the alternator to recharge from a deeply depleted state is also very dangerous to your battery because it charges too fast. In fact, on average, your battery would only last for ten recharges like that.

Treat the Fall season as a time to prepare your car for the harsh conditions that cooler temperatures bring.

1. Check the Belts and Hoses: Look for cracks, leaks, and wears in the belts and hoses. You want to ensure that there are no signs of splitting, fraying, or glazing. One major problem with faulty belts and hoses is overheating. Although this usually occurs in the Summer, it can occur anytime of the year, including during the colder months.

2. Check the Fluid Levels: It is crucial to replace your car’s fluid levels, as necessary. This would include windshield washer fluids, transmission fluids, coolant, brake fluids, and power steering fluids. All are very important for ensuring that your car runs smoothly. Washer fluid is important for maintaining visibility. Transmission fluid is important for cooling. 1. Is synthetic oil better for my engine than conventional oil?

Yes, synthetic oil is better for your engine than conventional oil. Although conventional oil (i.e., mineral oil) can provide adequate lubrication performance, it can’t compete with the overall engine performance and protection provided by synthetics.

Synthetics use higher quality base oils as compared to the less-refined base oils used in conventional oils which makes conventional oils:

For high mileage engines

However, if your vehicle has a high mileage engine (e.g., engine with more than 75,000 miles) that has never used synthetic motor oil, or one that has been poorly maintained with infrequent oil changes, we recommend easing into extended oil change intervals to allow Mobil 1 oil to clean up the engine. In these cases you should still follow the same basic oil change procedures (drain the old oil, remove the old oil filter, put in new oil and put on a new oil filter).

Follow your OEM’s recommended maintenance practices regarding oil changes, but you should follow more frequent (one or two non-extended drain) oil changes when first switching to synthetic oil. The reasoning behind these shortened oil change intervals is that a high mileage engine, or one that has had a lack of maintenance (including infrequent oil changes), will likely have a considerable buildup of sludge and deposits.

You’re driving down the road and suddenly the temperature gauge needle begins edging perilously close to the red zone. Immediately, you pull off the road, turn off the vehicle and lift the hood. Steam is billowing everywhere, but you understand that uncapping the radiator can burn you, so you wait for the vehicle to cool down before deciding what to do next. The majority of summer breakdowns are due to one thing — overheating. You can avoid this problem in the first place by checking off the following cooling system tasks before embarking on your next summer trip.

Keeping It Cool

Comprising many parts, your car’s cooling system includes a radiator, fan, water pump, thermostat, cooling jackets and a heater core. Multiple hoses connect various parts and send coolant through passages in the engine block and head. These hoses also pick up heat and disburse it through the radiator. This circulation process continues as long as the car is running and the cooling system is working.

To keep the system running, you should identify potential problems before they occur by performing these five cooling-system safety checks:

1. Check Coolant Levels

If you don’t have enough coolant, your car is prone to overheating. Always replenish as needed. If your owner’s manual indicates that it’s time to flush the system, then do so. Contaminants like rust or corrosion in the coolant reservoir are strong indicators that a flush is needed at once.

2. Inspect All Hoses

You may have sufficient coolant, but corroded or leaking hoses can lead to a breakdown. Consequently, dry or cracked heater hoses and loose clamps or connections may cause coolant leakage. If you see a bright green puddle or stream underneath your car that is slippery to the touch, then you have a coolant leak. To remedy this, replace hoses and tighten clamps as needed or stop by the shop.

3. Examine the Fan

If the vehicle’s air conditioning output seems weak or the temperature gauge never reads cool, then locate the mechanical fan clutch and rotate it by hand while the engine is cold. If the fan spins more than five times, the clutch is most likely bad Other telltale signs of fan clutch damage are silicon fluid leaking from the bearing seal and a broken or weakened thermostatic spring. If any of these problems are present, then replace the fan clutch. Inspect the fan belt, too, and replace it if it’s worn.

It’s a good idea that while the weather is still pleasant that you set aside some time to tend to your vehicle’s maintenance needs.

CHECK ALL YOUR LIGHTS You need lights to see and be seen, especially when rain and fog reduce visibility. Check that all lights are functional, including marker lights, turn signals, hazard lights, brake lights (including the center high mount brake light), reverse lights, taillights, headlights and fog lights. If you find any blown bulbs, consider replacing the matching bulb on the other side at the same time, as it may not be far from going out as well. Generally headlights should be replaced in pairs.

SWAP YOUR WIPERS A good guideline is to replace wiper blades every six months, but they may wear sooner. Now is a good time to replace any wiper blades that streak, chatter or don’t clear the windshield properly. Make sure to use the correct length of wiper blade and don’t forget the rear wiper if your SUV or van is so equipped.

CHECK YOUR TIRES Check that your summer or all-season tires have at least 4/32 inches of tread depth remaining. Look for abnormal tread wear, which may indicate an alignment or suspension problem. It might also be time for a tire rotation to ensure even tire wear. If you have a spare tire pull it out and make sure it is aired up.

CHECK THE BATTERY First, look for corrosion on the battery terminals. This needs to be cleaned or repaired to eliminate resistance between the battery and the rest of the electrical system, such as the starter and blower. Then, have the battery load-tested — replace it if it’s too weak for a cold start. Also check the battery age to see if it is nearing the end of its service life. A typical battery lasts 3-5 years so be prepared for a replacement if yours is older.

AIR CONDITIONING It not only cools air during the summer, it also works as a dehumidifier. Functional or not, have its performance checked to ensure year-long operation. Even when the weather turns pleasantly cool make sure to run your air conditioning once a week to keep it in good shape. Running the air conditioner helps keep components lubricated while also keeping the seals fresh and less likely to leak.

CHECK FLUIDS AND INSPECT BELTS Check and adjust all fluid levels, including engine oil, engine coolant, power-steering fluid and transmission fluid. Check and adjust V-belts and serpentine belts and replace if needed. Keep in mind that modern serpentine belts can still look fine due to advances in materials, which means they don’t crack as much as the old belts. These modern belts actually wear down like a tire and lose their ability to grip pulleys effectively..

CHECK THE COOLING SYSTEM The number one cause of summer breakdowns is the cooling system, so getting that serviced is a great recommendation for end of summer maintenance. The coolant should be flushed usually every two years or per manufacturer specs.

Cabin air filters are relatively new. Not all vehicles have them, so its common to confuse cabin air filters with the engine air filter. They are completely separate filters. It's easy to get mixed up.

Every vehicle has an engine air filter that cleans the air going into the engine , but not all vehicles have a cabin air filter that cleans the air going into the passenger compartment .

The cabin air filter cleans out dust, pollen, spores and other pollutants. To give a point of comparison, a grain of sand is about 200 microns across. A cabin air filter can stop particles that are just 3 microns in size . It really does make the vehicle passenger cabin a much more pleasant environment.

When the cabin air filter gets dirty, drivers just need to replace it. Your owner's manual may have a recommended interval for changing it. If not we can inspect it at Auto Select. Here are nine items to check each time you’re getting ready to tow a trailer. We're not saying these are the ONLY items that you should check, but they're pretty important.

1. Brakes: Make sure your brakes are in good working order. When towing, you need more stopping distance and so having brakes that are even slightly worn could be a hazard.

2. Cooling System : Your vehicle will get heated up by pulling an extra load so your cooling system needs to work optimally to safely tow.

3. Hitching Devices: Check the hitch ball regularly to make sure that it hasn’t loosened and that any tow bar used is parallel to the ground when the towed vehicle is attached.

4. Safety Chains: If your trailer becomes unhitched when you’re towing, the only thing keeping the two vehicles together will be your safety chains.

5. Springs and Shock Absorbers: Consider upgrading your tow vehicle's suspension. Add heavy-duty springs and shock absorbers and make sure they're in good shape before each tow.

6. Tires: Tires with the correct load rating and proper inflation are important. Also, the trailer tires are more likely to wear out from dry rot and age instead of highway miles.

7. Wiring: Perhaps your truck came prewired for trailer towing from the factory or maybe your pre-installed hitch already contains the necessary connector. Make sure that nothing has short circuited before you tow.

8. Mirrors: Visibility can be a challenge when you’re towing something behind you. You can choose replacement mirrors or wide-angle clip-on mirrors, so test options out to see what works best.

Your vehicle AC system is fairly complex. Breaking it down into its major components can help learn how it works. Almost every car features the same basic air conditioning parts that work together to keep things cool when the weather turns hot. Here’s an overview of your vehicle’s air conditioning system.

REFRIGERANT Over the years there have been several different refrigerant types used in automobiles. Most people use the term “Freon” to describe all refrigerants, but in actuality it is a brand name mostly associated with R12 refrigerant. R12 refrigerant was used for decades until it was banned in 1996. Next came R134a which was found to be more environmentally friendly while still working similarly to R12. In fact some R12 air conditioning systems can be converted to R134a with the right steps. But R134a was eventually shown to also damage the environment. The current improved refrigerant is 1234yf and has already been put into use by almost every automaker. It is important to note that you cannot mix any of these refrigerants. Each air conditioning system is also designed to hold a precise amount of refrigerant. Having too much or too little refrigerant leads to the system not performing at peak cooling ability.

COMPRESSOR Compressing a gas heats it up, and then allowing it to decompress again and condense into a liquid causes it to lose its heat rapidly. Quickly moving from that liquid state back to a gaseous state absorbs ambient heat and then the process can start all over again. The compressor is the part of your car’s air conditioning system that takes care of the first part of that equation to squeeze gaseous refrigerant. The compressor is usually driven by the accessory belt of the engine. Today most manufacturers use an axial style compressor which is both compact and efficient. An axial compressor uses multiple pistons and a swash plate to move them up and down to compress the refrigerant. Much like your engine the compressor also needs to be lubricated. A very precise amount of special oil is added to the system to keep things moving inside the compressor. Much like the previously mentioned refrigerant, compressor oil is very specific for use with certain refrigerants and cannot be mixed.

CONDENSER Once the refrigerant has been pressurized, it’s time to send it to the condenser, where it cools down inside a series of finned tubes. As it cools, it condenses back into a liquid state, although it’s still under pressure. Before hitting the next stage in its journey, this liquid is passed through a receiver/dryer mechanism that removes any water that might have somehow contaminated the refrigerant, which eliminates the risk of ice crystals forming inside a car air conditioning system. The condenser is usually located in front of the radiator where it can get the most ambient air passing through it. The receiver/dryer typically looks like a cylinder (think small fire extinguisher size) and is filled with desiccant to capture moisture. Whenever a compressor is replaced it is common to require replacing the receiver/dryer as well as part of the warranty, as the old receiver/dryer may have debris inside it that can damage the new compressor.

EVAPORATOR The evaporator is located outside the engine bay, usually along the firewall inside a vehicle’s cabin. The evaporator is placed inside a box that is plumbed to the vehicle’s cabin air ducts. A fan moves air through the ducts and through the evaporator. After being allowed to move from the high pressure environment of the condenser to the low pressure evaporator by way of the thermal expansion valve, the liquid refrigerant enters the evaporator where it is exposed to the heat from the passenger compartment — the very temperature that made you switch the A/C on in the first place. This exposure causes the fluid to actually boil — because the boiling point is very low in liquid form — and the end result is its transformation into a gas once more. In the process of becoming a gas it absorbs a lot of heat from the surrounding air, which chills the evaporator coil enough so that a fan blowing over it can redistribute that cold air through the vents in your car. Any condensation that collects on the outside of the evaporator is drained through the bottom of the air box and out the bottom of the vehicle. Though your car AC system is fairly complex, breaking it down can make an overwhelming concept much easier to understand. We rely on our brakes to safely slow and stop our vehicles. You’ve probably had the experience where you’ve slammed on your brakes and started to skid. When your wheels are locked up, you are just sliding over the road. And if the road is wet or slick or covered with gravel – you really get out of control. Steering is next to impossible. That is why anti-lock brake systems (ABS) were invented: to help you maintain control in extreme stopping conditions.

GRINDING NOISE? Most of the time when you hear car noises that sound like grinding it’s an indication that one of your vehicle’s components has worn out. What does it mean when your vehicles tire pressure warning light comes on?

It means that one or more of your tires has low air pressure. The dashboard warning light, which looks like a cross-section of a tire with some lines in it, comes on when the tire pressure is 20% below what the vehicle manufacturer recommends . So, if your recommendation is for 35 psi (pounds per square inch), the light will come on when your pressure falls to 28 psi.

It’s important to note that 20% below recommended pressure is significantly under-inflated . This means that you will be experiencing degraded handling and that your tire will be running hotter than it should. This can not only be a safety hazard, but your tires will wear prematurely and could even suffer a heat related failure.

You should not use your Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) warning light as your trigger for checking your tire pressure. You should still check tire pressure at least once a month .

Some people mistake the tire pressure printed on the side of the tire as the recommended pressure for the vehicle. This is not the case. The information on the tire is the range the tire can handle. The correct pressure for your vehicle is on a plate or sticker on the driver’s side door or door jamb . This is the pressure your tires should have to match the engineered handling capacity of your vehicle. Please note that the pressure may be different for your front and rear tires.

You TPMS does not have a regularly scheduled maintenance interval. However, be aware that the batteries in the sensors mounted in each wheel will eventually die, illuminating the warning light and necessitating replacing the sensor . Sensors can also be damaged by road salt and other contaminants.

Your radiator hoses carry coolant between your engine and radiator. It’s an important job. If a hose fails, you could lose your engine coolant which might lead to overheating and very expensive engine damage, so you want to make sure you always have good hoses.

Radiator hoses are very resilient, but they are subject to very harsh conditions. Think about it, the temperature might be below freezing when you start your engine and the coolant could be up over 100 degrees Fahrenheit within a mile. Tires By the Numbers. What Tire Numbers Mean

You may have noticed your tires have a pretty long number on them. Yours might start with a letter, then a 3-digit number, followed by a few more numbers and letters. That string of letters and numbers is very important for your vehicle because it contains useful information on what tires will give you the performance to meet your vehicle’s original design specifications.

These numbers can be found in most owners' manuals and usually on the driver's side doorframe. Generally, it's a good idea to stick with the vehicle manufacturer's recommendations.

Let's look at an example. One customer's SUV has this number on her tires: P245/70R17 108T.

The first letter, P, means it's intended for passenger vehicles. Some tires don't have any letter at the beginning, which means it's a metric tire. Some tires may also have LT at the beginning or end, which means “light truck”.

The next number, 245, in our example, indicates the tire's width in millimeters from sidewall to sidewall. So, this one is 245 mm wide.

The number after that, 70 in our example, stands for the ratio of the height to its width, or the aspect ratio. In our example, the number 70 means the height is 70 percent of the tire width. High-performance road tires will have a lower aspect ratio than a tire designed for comfort or off-road use.

The next letter, R, in our example, is the type of tire it is, radial in this case. The next number, 17 in our example, is wheel diameter in inches.

Load index is the next number, 108 in our example. The maximum load this tire can carry is 2,205 pounds (1,000 kg). The higher the load index, the more weight it will take. To find that information, you need to reference the standardized Load Index table – which is another reason to seek expert guidance from your Auto Select Tire Experts. And finally, that last letter, T, is the speed rating, basically the maximum speed for which a tire is designed – 118 miles per hour (190 kph) in this case. Generally, the higher the letter, the higher the speed rating. Except for “H” – for some reason that slots in between “U” and “V”.

In some cases, you can change tire and wheel sizes, but it's best to get expert help since mismatching tires and wheels with a vehicle can cause performance and safety issues. It requires resetting some of the electronic systems to compensate for the new tire/wheel size. So, consult your advisor when it's time to put a new set of tires on your vehicle. Hey, at least now you know what those funny numbers and letters mean!

RECOMMENDED TIRE TREAD DEPTH FOR UPCOMING WINTER WEATHER

According to Consumer Reports’ testing, a tire’s tread depth is essential to disperse rainwater, slush, and snow. As tires wear, this ability to hold the road confidently diminishes.

In Consumer Reports tire tests, they started to see a decline in the performance of tires with half their tread depth still left—well before most drivers would consider replacement.

A tire with a half-tread depth usually has 5/32 to 6/32 of an inch remaining. Tires are worn-out when they reach 2/32 of an inch, but you don’t need to go that low to see a substantial decline in performance on slick (wet, snowy, or icy) surfaces.

On average with the half-tread tires, there was:

A 14 percent decline in snow traction (based on the measured distance that it takes a vehicle to get up to speed).
An 8 percent loss in hydroplaning resistance (based on the observed speed at which hydroplaning first occurred driving through standing water at our test track in Connecticut).
A 7 percent loss in wet braking (based on the stopping distance from 60 mph on a wet surface, measured at our test track).
A small loss in braking ability on ice (based on the stopping distance from 10 mph on the surface of a Connecticut ice rink).

This had the largest impact on snow traction, where acceleration fell about 14 percent, and on wet stopping distances, which increased by about 7 percent, compared with new versions of the same tires with full tread depth. All of the tires tested worked well in dry and temperate conditions.

The findings reinforce our recommendation that drivers use winter/snow tires if driving a lot in snow. These are specially formulated and constructed to provide maximum grip in snowy and icy conditions. We typically advise that replacement should begin when tires are down to 4/32 of an inch, but with snow, you want to make sure you have at least that tread depth in the middle of winter, even if that means replacing tires a bit earlier than you would during milder seasons.”

When to Replace Tires:

To monitor your tire’s tread depth, buy a treaddepth gauge from an auto parts store, or simply use a quarter to judge whether the tires need replacing. If the top of George Washington’s head is just visible when placed head first in a tread groove, the tread has about 4/32 of an inch depth. That’s enough to offer some allweather grip, but you’ll want to start shopping for replacements. Certainly when any tire groove is at 2/32 of an inch, it’s worn-out and needs immediate replacement. You can check by using a penny; the distance between the top of Abraham Lincoln’s head is 2/32 of an inch.

Bottom Line: All-season tires perform well for modest snow conditions. But as the test results show, tires that are at 5/32 or lower in the fall, should be replaced before the winter weather arrives!

The last thing any driver needs is a vehicle that breaks down in cold, harsh winter weather. The Car Care Council recommends that car owners follow its Fall Car Care Month checklist and inspect their vehicles before the temperatures drop and severe weather hits.

Heating, Wipers & Lights

Make sure heaters, defrosters and wipers work properly.
Consider winter wiper blades and use coldweather washer fluid. As a general rule, wiper blades should be replaced every six months.
Check to see that all exterior and interior lights work and headlights are properly aimed.

Tires & Brakes

Check the tire tread depth and tire pressure of all tires, including the spare. If snow and ice are a problem in your area, consider special tires designed to grip slick roads.
During winter, tire pressure should be checked weekly.
Have the brakes checked. The braking system is the vehicle’s most important safety item.

Gas, Oil & Filters

Keep your gas tank at least half full throughout the cold weather to prevent moisture from forming in gas lines and possibly freezing.
Be diligent about changing the oil and filter at recommended intervals. Dirty oil can spell trouble in winter. Consider changing to “winter weight” oil if you live in a cold climate.
Check the fuel, air and transmission filters at the same time.
System Checks – Charging, Cooling & Exhaust
Have the battery and charging system checked, as cold weather is hard on batteries.
Clean, flush and put new antifreeze in the cooling system. As a rule of thumb, this should be done every two years.
Have the exhaust system checked for carbon monoxide leaks, which can be especially dangerous during cold weather driving when windows are closed.

Pack the Essentials

Make sure that your ice scraper and snow brush are accessible and ready to use.
Stock an emergency kit with jumper cables, a flashlight, blankets, extra clothes, bottled water, nonperishable food and a first aid kit with any needed medication.

Winter magnifies existing problems like hard starts, sluggish performance and rough idling, so a little car care now is a sensible way to avoid being stranded out in the cold later. It’s a small investment of time and money to help avoid the cost and hassle of a breakdown during the cold winter months ahead.

What is a TSB also referred to as a Technical Service Bulletin?

Once a new vehicle is introduced and starts being driven by thousands of actual drivers, weaknesses in parts or design are revealed. So, automakers send out TSBs, so service technicians will know to look for those problems. A TSB can be issued for things such as a loud noise when the vehicle turns or a power door that won't close properly.

A TSB is not the same as a recall . If a vehicle has a defect that could result in people being hurt or illegal emissions, that vehicle is recalled. The manufacturer must pay for a safety defect to be fixed, usually at a dealership.

When a Technical Service Bulletin is issued, it's an acknowledgment that the vehicle manufacturer has noticed a pattern of something not working the way it should. They also suggest the proper repair to address these known issues. The cost for a TSB is usually only covered by the manufacturer if the vehicle is still under warranty.

If your vehicle is no longer covered by a warranty, but a TSB has been issued on a certain problem, any service facility can perform the service. Ask your Service Advisor about TSBs that may have been issued for your vehicle. The TSB will also guide the technician on the best repair procedure to get your vehicle working the way it should.

Steering & Suspension - Ensure Your Vehicle has a Smooth Ride

Are you experiencing rough vibrations coming through your steering wheel? The quality of your ride might be suffering from a worn-out steering and suspension system. Don't ignore these signs:

Diminished responsiveness, such as a pulling effect on the steering wheel.
A lack of control or drifting when driving.
Locking or grinding while turning.
Squeaking or rattling noises from loose joints.

Cracked rubber coverings that protect steering and suspension parts from rust.

These issues are most likely coming from your front-end assembly, a combination of the vehicle's steering and suspension: steering gear box, rack and pinions, tie rod ends, boots and sleeves, shocks, shock absorbers, struts, ball joints, control arms and pitman arm. If your chassis is sagging lower than the specification for your car, focus on replacing the springs, along with the coated rubber pads called bushings.

Normal driving creates wear and tear on your steering and suspension systems. The replacement parts for a vehicle's front and rear suspension are typically not included in the manufacturer's warranty. Most vehicle owners will wait until after 50,000 miles before inspecting steering and suspension components. But it is always a good plan to have your steering and suspension systems inspected on a routine basis to ensure that the parts are in proper working order.

STEERING & SUSPENSION PARTS

Two separate systems, the steering system and suspension system, work together to help you control your car. Supporting the weight of the vehicle, the suspension system plays a crucial role in the stability, handling and drivability of your vehicle, while the steering system gives you directional control of your car. You need both of these systems working in top condition to ensure that you maintain control of your vehicle.

Keep in mind, any replacement of shocks and struts will require a wheel alignment, which not only ensures that your tires will wear evenly, but will give you the best balance, comfort and control moving forward. Many of the steering and suspension mechanisms must be changed in pairs, like front struts and rear shock mounts. Small components for updating a vehicle's steering and suspension include coil springs, universal joints, the mounting plate, the bearing plate, pressure hoses and a power steering pump.

An overhaul of a vehicle's steering and suspension will very likely require replacing large components. For instance, the steering linkage assembly, which transfers movements from the driver to the tires, allowing the steering wheel to direct where the vehicle goes. Other large components that might need replaced include the rear differential, sway bars and stabilizers.

Oxygen Sensor - What Does it Do for My Vehicle? Read More

Many people hear the term “oxygen sensor" and figure it must have something to do with sensing oxygen. Let’s break it down; your vehicle has an oxygen sensor in the exhaust manifold that measures how much un-burned oxygen there is in the exhaust. The sensor reports its findings to the engine control unit (ECU), which knows how much oxygen there should be in the exhaust. Based on that information, the ECU will adjust the amount of fuel it sends to the engine.

This feedback and adjustment loop is non-stop. The goal is to have the optimal air to fuel ratio for performance , efficiency and to lower harmful emissions.

Now there is a second oxygen sensor located in the exhaust pipe after the catalytic converter. It also measures the amount of oxygen in the exhaust after it has been treated by the catalytic converter. As this measurement is reported back to the ECU, the computer compares the oxygen levels before and after the catalytic converter to determine if the converter is still functioning properly.

Four-cylinder vehicles have two oxygen sensors. V-6 and V-8 engines have four sensors, two for each bank of cylinders. As you can imagine, the oxygen sensor lives and functions in a pretty hot environment so they do wear out over time . Substances in the exhaust can also damage them, leading to failure. Outside elements like water and road salt can corrode an oxygen sensor. When the sensor goes bad it simply needs to be replaced .

You may be interested to know that oxygen sensors are often replaced needlessly. When the oxygen sensor returns a measurement that is out of the specified range, it may trigger a trouble code in the ECU, and the Check Engine light is illuminated . Inexperienced do-it-yourselfers or parts store employees may read a trouble code that reports an out-of-range sensor reading. That could mean that the sensor is bad, but it could also mean that the sensor is accurately reporting a condition caused by some other malfunction . A skilled diagnostician can sort this out and will only replace the oxygen sensor when it has truly gone bad.

Signs of brake problems often fall into one of two categories: making noise or a pulsation in the brake pedal. Let's start with the noise.

Most brake pads have an audible brake wear indicator. This is a small piece of metal that rubs on your brake rotor when the brake pads are worn to the point they should be replaced. The noise is a chirp or soft squeal. This noise gives drivers enough warning to get their brakes serviced while there is still enough brake pad left to enable you to stop safely.

Schofield residents who ignore the chirp find that the sound changes to a grinding noise . That is more serious. It means that the friction material on your brake pad is worn away and metal parts of the brake are grinding against the rotor when you press on the brakes. Obviously, this metal-on-metal means that your brakes aren't stopping very well. It also means that your rotor is being damaged. It may need to be resurfaced or even replaced.

Pedal pulsation is another noticeable sound. When your rotor is not in perfect alignment, it pushes against the brake pads unevenly as you apply the brakes. There could be a number of reasons for this. The rotor and wheel hub may not be mating well, causing the rotor to be spinning out of vertical alignment. This misalignment can be caused by either the rotor or the hub, or a combination of the two. If this persists, the rotor may even start to wear unevenly to the point that its thickness varies, causing an even more noticeable pulsation. This uneven mating of the brake pad and the rotor when braking means less contact and it will reduce braking power.

Your service center or the team at Auto Select can determine the cause of the misalignment and remedy the problem.

Either unusual brake noise or pedal pulsation are signs that there are brake problems. Drivers should have a tech at Auto Select check their brakes thoroughly and recommend any steps necessary to correct the issue.

Windshield Wiper Blade Replacement & Upgrade Guide

Wiper blades may not be the most exciting topic, but they are pretty important. Most of us have had an experience when a sudden snow or rain storm hits while we're driving; then when we turn on the wipers – nothing but streaks. This can be especially disconcerting at night when the glare of on-coming headlights distorts your vision.

Simple answer: change your wiper blades BEFORE they fail . Check them out every couple of months just to see how they are working. Of course, the more you use your wipers, the sooner they'll wear out. Areas with lots of storms or those who drive a lot where there are bugs and road grime will use their blades more.

But even when you're not using your blades, they are exposed to sunlight, ozone, soap and extreme hot and cold temperatures which lead to deterioration. Your blades can just rot away and fall apart before you need them. Of course, using your wipers when the blades are torn can lead to scratches in your windshield, and you don't want to risk windshield replacement over the small cost of a couple of wiper blades.

Now let's talk about wiper blade upgrades. You can upgrade both the design and the wiper material. Let's start with the material. Traditional black rubber blades do a great job of clearing your windshield when they are new. Over time, all of the conditions mentioned above damage them and degrade their performance. Silicone blades are far less affected by environmental conditions and will simply perform better for a longer time.

There are two elements to the design. First, the wiper blade itself: Some have a single wiping edge. Others have multiple edges – kind of like a multi-blade razor. The idea is to maximize wiping power during both swipes of the blade.

The other design element is with the wiper frame. This is the structure that applies pressure on the blade as it passes over the windshield. A conventional frame has four to six contact points on the blade. These apply pressure used to clear water and snow. A beam frame provides uniform pressure along the entire surface of the wiper. Their shape catches the wind passing over the vehicle to provide additional downforce to help get a clean swipe. A hybrid frame has four to six contact points as with a conventional blade, but also incorporates an airfoil to provide additional downforce as with beam blades.

So which blade should you choose? Always use at least the grade and design that came with the vehicle from the manufacturer. Upgrade for better performance and longer lasting blades. The extra cost of premium blades is a good value for this safety system and longevity.

Why You Need To Check Your Transmission Fluid

Transmissions are heavy duty pieces of equipment that are designed to last a long time. But like any other mechanical equipment, they require maintenance, and they'll eventually wear out and need repair. So let's focus on what you can do to help protect your vehicle.

The first thing you can do is to make sure your transmission always has enough fluid. Transmission fluid cools and lubricates the transmission. When there's not enough fluid, the transmission will run hotter and wear out sooner.

The transmission fluid also provides the pressure needed to transfer power from the engine to the transmission. Not enough fluid, and your transmission won't shift properly.

At Auto Select, we will check your transmission fluid level with a full service oil change and top it off if needed. If you see any transmission fluid on the driveway – it's a reddish color – have us inspect it for a leak. A gasket, hose or seal could be leaking and may need to be repaired.

The next thing you can do to prolong the life of your transmission is to replace your transmission fluid on schedule. As you can imagine, all those gears grinding on each other result in lots of little bits of metal in the fluid. This “grit” flowing through your transmission under pressure eats away at seals and gaskets which can lead to leaks.The more there is, the faster the transmission parts will wear out.

Transmission fluid also contains detergents and other additives to protect your transmission. These additives are depleted over time, so old fluid doesn't protect as well as new fluid. Your owner's manual or your service advisor will have a recommendation for when you should have a transmission service.

If your transmission isn't shifting as smoothly as it should, or if you suspect a transmission leak, have us take a look at it. And ask if it's time for a transmission service. Regular maintenance and taking care of small leaks right away will help your transmission last as long as possible.

My Engine Never Overheats. Why Should I Get a Cooling System Service?

If you don't have the full answer you may end up in trouble. It would seem that if your engine is running at the proper temperature that everything must be OK? But the fact is that engine overheating is the most common cause of mechanical failure for engines. So how do you get from “everything is fine” to suddenly overheating and potential engine damage?

Truth is, it’s not a sudden process, and it’s often an invisible one. Your engine coolant circulates through your engine where it absorbs heat and then flows through the radiator where it is cooled – and then back to the engine again. As long as the coolant is able to flow freely – and there are no leaks – then the coolant can do its job. This is the point where drivers have to look deeper.

The cooling system is its own environment: very hot, with a number of reactive materials like various types of metal, plastics and rubber. Over time the coolant becomes corrosive. Small pieces of metal and other materials flake off and circulate in the coolant. As these bits start to clog up the small passages in the radiator, they restrict the coolant flow, leading to overheating. Corrosive coolant can actually eat away at the system and cause leaks as well.

New coolant is full of anti-corrosion additives. These additives neutralize the reactions that lead to corrosion. The additives are eventually used up, leaving the cooling system unprotected.

This is why your service advisor and the team at Auto Select provides recommendations for when your cooling system should be serviced. We can also test your coolant for freeze point and PH to see if it needs to be replaced (if you've added straight water to the system these numbers may be off). You need to get fresh coolant in there to continue to protect against corrosion.
