Door County Coastal Byway, Door County, WI
Long lauded for its stunning natural beauty, the Door County area offers a truly picturesque route for the devoted leaf-peeper. In 2010, the Door County Coastal Byway earned the designation for the approximate 66-mile route that nestles most of the peninsula’s perimeter. The route follows Highways 42 and 57, well known by frequent visitors. According to Wisconsin Trails, expect rich and varied leaf color from a diverse panorama of deciduous trees from Egg Harbor to Fish Creek, Ellison Bay to Northport and near Bailey’s Harbor. You can choose from popular autumn festivals in Egg Harbor and Sister Bay, enjoy a show at the outdoor Peninsula Players Theater in Fish Creek, or simply explore the Lake Michigan coast.
The Wisconsin Great River Road, Prescott to Kieler, WI
Starting in Prescott and snaking along the mighty Mississippi River for 250 miles to Kieler, the Wisconsin Great River Road travels through 33 river towns. From the historic Prairie du Chien to bustling La Crosse, many unspoiled landscapes and fantastic views abound along the road’s banks and bluffs. Cultural highlights of the area include the Flyway Film Festival, which draws top independent filmmakers from around the world to the Pepin/Stockholm area on the third weekend of October, to the many Oktoberfest and Halloween-themed events. You can even get a free, town-by-town guided audio tour offered by the La Crosse Area Convention and Visitors Bureau.
Kettle Moraine Scenic Drive, Whitewater Lake to Elkhart Lake, WI
A 115-mile drive through six counties, this route links the two units of the Kettle Moraine Scenic Forest. Beginning near Whitewater Lake in southeastern Walworth County, the green acorn signs denote the route all the way to Elkhart Lake in northern Sheboygan County. This route covers a wide variety in topography, filled with lakes, bogs and wetlands, thanks to the retreat of a massive glacier 10,000 years ago. Experience the lives of 19th century pioneers at the Old World Wisconsin Museum, admire the architecture and spiritual serenity at Holy Hill Basilica, and plan to stop in the charming, colonial-inspired town of Delafield.
